A Potpourri of Writing Contests

So many writing competitions, so little time -- especially in December. Here is a potpourri of "no entry fee" contests for your consideration, with deadlines in either January or February 2010.

If you have an original recipe involving chocolate, Divine Chocolate USA is looking for a previously unpublished “recipe story.” This contest is open to U.S. residents over the age of 18. Awards in four categories will be considered: Cookie, Cake, Pastry, and Drink. First prize winners receive a year's supply of Divine Chocolate, $250.00 cash, and more. Entries must be received online or via snail mail no later than midnight EST on January 5, 2010.

Revenge Ink, a web site whose philosophy is “Allowing new writing to emerge free and unhindered, in a spirit of inclusiveness, openness and an unshakable respect for the individual and the fundamentally human need for Art,” has announced a writing competition. They are looking for “10 pages of your most crackling prose – no racism, sexism, or hate-writing please," and they will publish the best in an Anthology one year after they receive the last entries. The deadline to enter via e-mail is February 28, 2010. Winning entries will be posted on their web site for 30 days and will be considered for publication.

Memoir (and) is accepting Prose, Poetry, Graphic Memoir, and Narrative Photography (previously unpublished; simultaneous submissions okay). The reading period, which opened November 1, closes on February 15, 2010. There are cash awards, publication opportunities, and copies of the journal for the winners.

To encourage cross-genre writing, The Feral Pages web site is offering a “Potato Head Challenge.” The Feral Pages has constructed a “Potato-Head” type method for constructing a story (illustration borrowed from their web site). Writers choose elements from three stereotypes: character (Zombie, Soccer Mom, or P.I.), setting (Saloon, Bahamas, Lunar Colony), and plot points (found lost love; character is dying; must solve a crime). The deadline is January 15, 2010. The winning entry will be published in the February/March issue of The Feral Pages.

Spiritfirst.org is hosting its First Annual Spirit First Meditation Poetry Contest. Previously unpublished poems of any length and any style, with a theme of mediation, mindfulness, stillness, or silence, may be sent via e-mail or snail mail by January 31, 2010. Winning poems will be published on their web site and in their newsletter. Three cash prizes will be awarded.

A special thank you to Erika Dreifus for the heads-up about the Divine Chocolate USA and Spirit First contests on her "Practicing Writing" blog, and to Hilary Davidson, for letting me know about The Feral Pages. Hilary's story, "Undying Love" will appear in the next issue of The Feral Pages (Congrats, Hilary!).

Some people are just so organized. How can anyone compete in contest that requires writing around the holidays? I have enough trouble just writing a quick note on my Christmas cards, while doing everything else. Boy am I getting old.

I hear ya, Mason! It's tough! It's amazing how in the month of December we're suddenly expected to have more time, more energy, more money, than any other month of the year!

I feel constitutionally unable to write anything before I finish this first draft (which I should be doing instead of surfing at this moment!)

However, I like knowing what people are up to, and YAY to Hilary! The Feral Pages looks neat- I'll have to check it out during my next allotted break time.

Thanks Kathy. You are our contest maven.

A great potpourri of contests! Thanks for bringing them to our attention, Kathy!

Clare -- Keep going with that draft -- full steam ahead! I like the idea of allotted break times...Thanks for taking the time to read/comment here today!

Cathi and Elaine - It's my pleasure to write about these contests; when I learn about them via blogs, Twitter, surfing, etc., I like to share the info. It may provide a challenge, or possibly present an incentive for a writer to turn something out if he/she hasn't been at the keyboard lately.

Hi Charles,
You never know -- one of these just might interest you. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi David,
I agree! Hilary is one extraordinary lady, and I've had the pleasure of meeting her at our Sisters in Crime meetings in NYC. I loved reading "Insatiable" at BTAP. I can't wait for THE DAMAGE DONE to come out!
I'm looking forward to spending some more time at The Feral Pages. This Potato Head Challenge sounds like fun!

Hey Laura,

Looks like we literally were on THE SAME PAGE! I hope you give it some consideration, if you are able to take a break from your romantic suspense ms. If you go for it, good luck!

So that's why my ears were burning... Thanks so much to Kathy for this terrific post, and to Kathy, David and Clare for your incredibly kind comments. You guys are the greatest.

I just wanted to add that I found the editor at THE FERAL PAGES, Lyman Feero, a real pleasure to work with. He has that in common with David at BEAT TO A PULP!
