Uncage Me--The Giveaway

You may remember that a few weeks ago I reviewed Uncage Me edited by Jen Jordan, which is the follow up anthology to Expletive Deleted.

Here is a link to the review post.

To recap, the anthology contains twenty-two stories. Most are noir. Some are beyond noir and dwell in that space that pushes against the margins of what some readers may think of as acceptable. I told you that I found “The Biography of Stoop, the Thief” by Steven Torres to be bleak but intimately touching, and that “Games” by Bryon Quertemous is well written but not an easy read for the squeamish, and that “School Daze” by J.A. Konrath has Harry McGlade as a protagonist which instantly lets you know the kind of story it will be.

As promised, I read a few more stories. Blake Crouch spins a dark sibling yarn of suspense and terror in “*69” that left me daunted. Patrick Shawn Bagley meets the high standards of characterization that I have come to expect in his writing with “Welcome to Wal-Mart, Motherf**ker.” His protagonist, Tina, may not be the girl next door, but I’d know her if I met her on the street. In “No Thanks, PleaseDeclan Burke shows once again how adept people are at causing their own misery.

So, although I have not yet read every story, there is certainly enough variety and pushing of genre limits to make Uncage Me worth a second or even a third look. I have one brand, spanking new copy of Uncage Me that I am ready to mail to one of you. Just tell me in the comment section that you would like a chance to read it. And it might be fun if you want to let me know that you are not prone to nightmares due to seeing/reading about violence (as opposed, say, to nightmares caused to eating too much junk food at the carnival) or you could describe a weird nightmare you've had. Entries will be accepted until noon on Saturday, September September 5th. The winner will be announced on Sunday.

I think I probably qualify as too squeamish for this anthology! LOL!

Laura,

Spoken like a genuine writer of romantic suspense (among other things.)

Hi Liz,

The anthology IS intriguing and the stories I have read so far are very well written. I am sure the winner will enjoy it.

Into the hat you go.

Me too, me too - as one who does a crime fiction zine in Finnish, there's a possibility of me wanting to use one of the stories in translation. Which would benefit the author and the book and its editor and everyone else in the crime fiction community.

Hi Juri,

Welcome, and to reassure you, Paul, and anyone else from the International community, this is, indeed, an International giveaway.

Postage is no object! ;)

I'll pass on the contest, too, but wanted to stop in and say hello! I've been pretty lax about leaving comments lately!

Thanks for the review, and good luck to the contestants!

Since I've been working in the library this summer, I have way more books on my "to read" list than I'll ever get to, so I'll leave this one for those not already so behind. But it sounds intriguing!

I used to have this recurring nightmare where I rode a motorcycle across a desert to this pyramid made of rusty pipes. When I arrived at the pyramid I climbed through the pipes to the top where I found two identical green buttons swinging back and forth inside what appeared to be a centrifuge. For some reason I had to choose. One button blew the pyramid to bits, the other would allow me to wake up. I always picked the one that caused me to wake up. There. Make fun of me but I want the book.

Hey Terrie --

Just wanted to drop by. The anthology sounds great--count me in.

Michael, Valerie, Kieran and John,
your names shall neatly (or not so neatly) be written on a piece of paper and plunged into the hat.

Kieran, I am soooo glad you always find the wake-up button, otherwise you and the pyramid might both be blown to smithereens.

This anthology is already on my Christmas list but I'd love it if you could arrange for Santa to arrive a little early. Count me in for the contest!

Terrie Farley Moran said...

Hi Alan,

Your name will definitely be in the hat. I'll pop off an email to Santa to see if I can get him to pick the winner.

Bears. Bears were my nightmare, and I'm old enough now to identify them. The anthology sounds intriguing but ghoulish. I don't need any more reason to lie awake at night....

I would love the chance to read this book. I don't get nightmares after reading books of any kind!

Hi Lois,

Oh my bears, and not Winnie the Pooh, I'm betting.

Hey Wanda,

You are just under the wire. Into the hat with year.

Thanks to everyone for stopping by and commenting even if you weren't interested in getting a copy of the book.

Winner will be announced in a blog post that will go up here on WoM at noon on Sunday.

Have a great weekend.
