Most of Canadian artist Jessica Doyle's work is organic and warm-hearted (and tiny!), but I love her lines, and I found this grimmer one for today.
To be topical, and in case you're looking for something to spook you between runs for the doorbell:
The NYT's Terrence Rafferty recently reviewed some of the modern crop of female horror writers. Most often, they write more than horror, much as Mary Shelley did, or work that is suspenseful and strange enough to end up being called horror while crossing other genres and lines as well. One title mentioned, Sara Gran's Come Closer, really stuck with me after reading it a few years ago. Briefly but elegantly written, its shocks come from its normal context and the matter-of-fact narration of inexplicably escalating and mysterious events, not an amped-up gore factor. Chilling and exceptional.
Not sure whether Come Closer's even old enough to have been forgotten, but there are many Forgotten Books lurking at Patti Abbott's site.
Wherever you find yourself during this cycle's thinning of the veil, many Boos to Youse!

Thanks for visiting, Jessica and JD fan Stephanie!
Thanks, I'll add it on. One of my husband's favorite books.
Clare, Thank-you for introducing me to her work. A very impressive talent.
Hi Clare,
Thanks for this. I never heard of Jessica Doyle, but I will look for her art. This picture is stunning.
Thanks.

I just ordered Come Closer (it's a sickness, I tell you, the way I can't stop ordering books!). Thanks for the recommendation. The picture is wonderful too, I'll have to start following Jessica Doyle.
