MTM: A Tree Blooms in Brooklyn

Actually, a couple hundred of them do, all over the 52-acre Brooklyn Botanic Garden, since just after World War I. Outside Japan, the BBG is one of the best places for hanami, the tradition of enjoying flowers, but more specifically, celebrating the exquisitely transitory spring blossoming of cherry trees, sakura.

One of the densest spring canopies is found along the Cherry Esplanade and Cherry Walk, from which the garden's own web manager used over 3,000 digital photos taken three minutes apart, to create this short, time-lapse video of 2008's cherry blossoms with accompaniment by a local composer. (Thanks for the tip, Bonnie.)
Please do enjoy.

Clare,

The video is fantastic! Being a Bronx Botanical Garden kind of girl, I had no idea Brooklyn has all those cherry trees. I thought I'd have to go to D.C. if I wanted to see cherry blossoms in bloom. and I've lived in NY all my life!! Still learning!

Wonderful post!

Back in the '80s when I lived in Minnesota for a while, I had an argument with a guy who insisted that all of New York State was like the Bronx. This was during the time the Bronx was literally being burned down. My reaction then and now: (1) Not all of the Bronx is like the stereotype of the Bronx, (2) Upstate New York is about as rural and opposite of New York City as possible, and (3) New York City has some of the most scenic spots in the country. Anyone who doubts me should visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

Sometimes it's not just snobby urbanites stereotyping the fly-over country, eh, Elaine?

gagworthy? Beef is beef whether is comes from the top, side, or even the dangling bits beneath a bovine.

Great video in your post. I'd love to see the trees. I'm actually looking at visiting NYC early next year, February or March.

I still think you should gather up a group of y'alls New York friends and come down to Texas. I would love to be y'alls tour guide.

Does everyone remember the Japanese tune "Sakura?" Am I dating myself?

We have a gorgeous cherry blossoming tree that drops its beautiful petals onto our driveway. If I leave the car there, it becomes covered with petals and as I drive down the street the petals catch air and fly, leaving a trail of pink confetti. I feel like a bride again, but this time the flower girl is me - doing a bang up job, I might add!

Travis-

I said "comments" were leaning toward gagworthy. I even recall the word "puke" being used more than once. These are not my views or necessarily the views of WoM, I merely report what your commenters are saying. But I thought it was like a 2nd grader charging a nickel for a peek under a grody bandage. I assumed the description would make your post irresistible : )

I'm no expert on the Panhandle, pard, so feel free to tour us to all the high and low spots. If ya'll care for the terribly-named Metroplex, I might be your gal.

Nan- My car's been streaming flowerfetti for a couple weeks now, but I confess I hadn't thought of my wake as a glorious procession. Seems like something new is propagating every few days and there's a new roof coating of blossoms or pollen pods or helicopters. The weirdest ones looked like small broccoli trees.

Travis- If you do come to NYC, we should all meet for lunch or dinner. We could also take you to some of the tourist attractions. It's a sad fact that most NYers never see those landmarks unless they're showing them to a visiting friend.

Clare - I knew you were just having a little fun with my post. I actually expected the subject of bovine testicles to provoke many a comment. Are you talking about the metroplex as in Dallas-Ft Worth? If so yeah I know it fairly well though I only visit a couple of times a year.

Elaine - Lunch with all of y'all would be great. I have a friend who is an editor for Kensington that has already promised to be my guide but the more the merrier.

Love that place. My daughter used to live right around the corner from there.

Clare2e said...

Not that there's so much to see, Travis, but I'm born and bred in Big D.

So Patti- time for a new visit? I was present to see your daughter win her Edgar a few weeks ago. Her charm and obvious talent almost let me smother the green-eyed monster. Almost : )

Barrie- you also remind me it's been too long since I've seen that movie.

Linda- I loved your crisp, coastal MTM pics, and that group blog- With so many writers, it's more like a mob blog. Wow!

Clare2e- You learn something new everyday. I never suspected you were a fellow Texan. You should do a MTM psot about how you laned in New York and what keeps you there. or maybe highlight the differneces between your birthplace and home these days.
