Well, now that the contracts are signed and I am no longer afraid of jinxing things, I can announce that...
I have an agent! It almost makes up for the hives! (The latest theory: I could be allergic to garlic--how ghastly would that be? Did you know that virtually every packaged food has garlic in it? Any time a product says "spices," it means garlic. But that's a topic for another day.)
Anyway, I am the kind of person who sets a goal and works toward it, rarely considering what I will do once I achieve it. So for however long, I've been submitting to agents, going to conference, working and reworking my manuscripts. Now what? Oh, sure, I have to work on the next books, but what happens at this point? Since I figure I can't be that different from other people, who might not have considered the "what's next" aspect of all those endless submissions, I thought I'd post here a couple of things I've learned since I got "the call."
The book Jessica wanted is a cozy. That means it's the first of a series. Before she could submit to publishers, she wanted brief paragraphs on the premises of the next two books. Yikes! Luckily, I had some ideas for those and she said I don't have to stick to them too strictly once everything gets rolling.
My book is a cozy with a bead theme, so she also needed some "stuff." You know, like there are recipes in a culinary mystery. Those aren't too hard for me, since a great deal of my "day job" consists of explaining things to other beadmakers, customers, jewelry makers, etc, but it never occurred to me she'd need them up front, before she could submit to publishers.
And now that she's submitted the package? Well, we wait. Hmm...it seems I've been here before. I wasn't any good at waiting then, and I am no better now.

Hooray for Laura,
You have worked so hard to get to this moment. I see great and wonderful things in your future, but all celebratory meals will be sans garlic!!
Congratulations and keep us informed.
Terrie
Laura-
I'm so freaking happy for you, I could plotz!
I know Jessica has been your ideal, dream agent and with good reason. I hope she'll get greedy and speedy responses to your work and your series. I know you've put in lots of time and effort to make them great, so fingers crossed and CONGRATZ!!!!!!!
(notice the caps and excessive exclamations? well-deserved.)
:) :) :) :) :)
that is so great. :-)
Congrats!
I assuming you mean Jessica Faust from Book Ends. If so let me say she is very nice and down to earth. I ahve met her on a couple of occasions when she spoke at our local writers conference. I'm sure she will be a fabulous agent for you.
I too have a submission in at Book Ends albeit with a differnet agents. I can only hope to be as fortunate as you in the near future.
I remember meeting you for the first time at last year's Crimebake, hearing you say you created art beads for jewelry and were considering a series with a bead show platform. You SO deserve this...from what I've heard, you couldn't ask for a more terrific agent. You must be walking on air!
Congrats!! If it is Jessica Faust, I met her (briefly) at S'fest and Malice and thought she was very knowledgeable on the panels and very nice in person.
Mazel tov!
Sounds like your agent has a plan and a strategy for approaching editors. That's a real plus. Not all of them do and boy does that come back to haunt you later.
congrats
Thanks, everyone!
And Alex--that's one of the reasons I wanted her as an agent--the times I have heard her talk on panels and on her blog, she's always sounded as if she "has a plan."
I deleted the last comment. Jessica is an excellent agent so it's good news. This is my second run at it. I only wanted to put out a general aside that you can always check an agents record on publishers market place. But in Jessica's case, that's not necessary
How many agents are recognized by their first names? "Jessica" says it all!!! She has earned her way to the top. She knows what she's doing, with whom, when, where, why AND HOW!
Sure, as a writer you deserve the best, but your writing must indicate that you've done all your homework and then some!
Congrats! Won't it be a blast when you get a publisher, and upon the launch date all sign of rash is gone forever - and that you were just allergic to being unpublished?
Write ON!
Nan
Alex-
It's absolutely true. One should always check on an agent's record. In fact, I've posted about it a couple of times on this blog (here and here.)
I think all too many people are so excited that they hear back from an agent or publisher that they miss out on that, so it's a good reminder.
Though, as Nan says, if an agent is recognized merely by her first name, it's a pretty good sign! (Or, I suppose, a really, really bad one.)
